Hotel Gym Equipment in the UAE: How to Plan a Hotel Fitness Centre

A hotel gym is not a small commercial gym. It is used by guests who train alone, at any hour, with little time and no one to show them how a machine works.
This guide sets out how to plan and equip a hotel fitness centre in the UAE, for owners, operators, developers and hotel project teams.
1. Start with your guests
The guest profile decides the size of the room and the equipment mix.
Business travellers often want a short, familiar workout: cardio, a few machines and dumbbells. Resort and leisure guests may stay longer and use the gym more often. Serviced apartments and branded residences add residents who train regularly. Write down who will use the gym, when it will be busiest and whether you plan classes or personal training. That brief guides every decision that follows.
2. Check classification and brand standards early
Requirements differ by emirate, hotel category and operator, so confirm them before the room is drawn.
Abu Dhabi's hotel classification manual, for example, includes criteria for a health club or gym, covering points such as instructor availability, towels and drinking water. In Dubai, the Sports Council has introduced a star classification for fitness centres with 17 criteria, including equipment type and maintenance. International operators usually add their own brand standards on top. Collect all of these at the start, then design to the strictest one that applies to your property.
3. Size the room and the equipment mix
A well-chosen mix covers cardio, strength and stretching without crowding the room.
- Cardio: treadmills, bikes and a cross-trainer or rower, with simple consoles guests understand at a glance.
- Strength: a few selectorized machines or a multi-station, plus a functional trainer for cable exercises.
- Free weights: a dumbbell rack with adjustable benches.
- Stretching: a clear area with mats and small accessories.
Use each manufacturer's footprint and recommended clearances, and leave room to move between stations. For guidance on choosing between machine types, see plate-loaded vs selectorized machines.
4. Choose equipment that is safe to use alone
In most hotel gyms there is no one on the floor, so every machine must explain itself.
Selectorized machines with clear instruction labels, guided movement and easy weight changes suit unsupervised use well. Choose benches and racks that are stable and easy to adjust, and avoid equipment that needs a spotter or coaching. Plan clear signage, an emergency call point and good sightlines from reception or a camera, following your operator's safety standards.
5. Plan for noise, vibration and flooring
Guests sleeping above or beside the gym should never hear it.
Location matters most: a gym next to guest rooms needs more acoustic work than one beside a pool or lobby. Keep cardio and dumbbells away from shared walls, and specify flooring zone by zone with suitable impact and acoustic performance. Confirm floor loading and acoustic targets with your structural and acoustic engineers before equipment is ordered.
6. Design the guest experience
Small details shape how guests rate the gym.
Plan good lighting, mirrors, strong air conditioning and ventilation, a towel and water station, cleaning wipes near each zone and storage for guest belongings. Keep the room easy to clean and keep cables tidy so the space looks finished at any hour.
7. Protect uptime with maintenance
An out-of-order machine is noticed quickly and often mentioned in reviews.
Agree a preventive maintenance schedule before opening, keep a record of every machine and its warranty, and confirm how spare parts are supplied and how fast faults are fixed. Simple daily checks by hotel staff, such as cleaning and reporting faults, help catch issues early. Read more about our after-sales support.

Frequently asked questions
Does a hotel in the UAE need a gym?
It depends on the emirate, the hotel category and the operator's brand standards. Abu Dhabi's hotel classification manual, for example, includes criteria for a health club or gym, covering points such as instructor availability, towels and drinking water. Check the current criteria for your category with the relevant tourism authority.
What equipment should a hotel gym have?
Most hotel gyms combine a cardio line, a few selectorized machines or a multi-station, a dumbbell rack with adjustable benches, a functional trainer and a stretching area. The exact mix depends on the room size and who your guests are.
How do you reduce noise from a hotel gym?
Choose the location carefully, keep cardio and free weights away from walls shared with guest rooms, and specify flooring with impact and acoustic performance for each zone. Confirm structural and acoustic requirements with your engineer early in the design.
